Tool guide

What is a trade’s break-even price?

Break-even is the price where net P&L is approximately zero under the selected cost model. Spread, commission, swap and slippage can shift that level; however, if the entered execution price already embeds the bid/ask spread, entering the same spread again would double-count it.

Logic / formula

Break-even = entry ± total costs converted into price units. Cash-to-price conversion must match the actual contract and position used in the trade.

Read the output

Read break-even price with the cost breakdown and verify that no cost is already embedded in entry and entered a second time.

Direction-aware break-even price from spread allowance, slippage allowance, round-turn commission, swap, fixed costs, contract size, volume, and currency conversion.

Worked example

Example
A Buy trade with spread and round-turn commission
On a long trade, total costs shift break-even above entry; the exact move depends on spread, commission and other costs.

How to read the result

The headline number must be read with assumptions and warnings. Out-of-bound values should be corrected before trading.

Break-even distance shows how far price must move in your favor before costs are recovered. Use cost decomposition to identify which component contributes most to the shift.

What the TupTrader version adds

The value of this version is not cosmetic; the result, assumptions and workflow are connected to the practical capabilities below.

  • Cost decomposition
  • Break-even ladder
  • Price/Pip/Tick distance
  • Current price comparison mode
  • Open-trade cost profile
  • Double-count spread warning
  • Copy break-even
Turn the result into a workflow

Cross-check the result with the broker or platform. Record risk in the entry checklist. Record the actual value in the journal after the trade.

Common mistakes and limitations

  • Confusing risk with margin or potential profit
  • Ignoring costs and rounding
  • Using the wrong unit or currency
  • Future slippage and swap are not known in advance and are broker-specific. If spread is already embedded in executed entry and also entered separately, double counting can occur.

Frequently asked questions

Why is break-even above entry on a long trade?

Because costs must be recovered before the trade reaches net zero.

Should I enter both spread and commission?

Yes if both are separate real costs on the account, but avoid counting a cost already embedded in executed entry.

Do I need swap for an intraday trade?

It may be zero if the position never crosses the broker’s financing cutoff; check account rules.
